BC Housing looking to build 25-bed shelter for Salmon Arm’s homeless population
KAMLOOPS — BC Housing and the City of Salmon Arm are planning to build a new long-term 25-bed shelter for residents experiencing homeless.
In a news release issued Thursday (June 22) morning, the B.C. government says BC Housing is exploring options to build a modular shelter on a city-owned lot at 341-351 Fraser Ave. N.W. in Salmon Arm.
If successful, the shelter would provide 25 beds for Salmon Arm’s homeless population, as well as daily meals and support services. The province says the site was suggested by the City of Salmon Arm.
BC Housing and the city are currently negotiating a lease on the site for at least 10 years, with an option to extend. The proposed shelter site is subject to a public rezoning process. Funding details will be finalized once the project has been approved.
Finding shelter locations is a joint responsibility between municipalities and the province, and both parties must agree on a location for a new shelter to open.
